“Lord, Speak to Me” | HYMN of the week

Image
Words: Frances R. Havergal (1872) Music: George Hews (1835) Lord, speak to me that I may speak In living echoes of Thy tone; As Thou has sought, so let me seek Thine erring children lost and lone. O lead me, Lord, that I may lead The wandering and the wavering feet; O feed me, Lord, that I may feed Thy hungering ones with manna sweet. O strengthen me, that while I stand Firm on the rock, and strong in Thee, I may stretch out a loving hand To wrestlers with the troubled sea. O teach me, Lord, that I may teach The precious things Thou dost impart; And wing my words, that they may reach The hidden depths of many a heart. O give Thine own sweet rest to me, That I may speak with soothing power A word in season, as from Thee, To weary ones in needful hour. O fill me with Thy fullness, Lord, Until my very heart overflow In kindling thought and glowing word, Thy love to tell, Thy praise to show. O use me, Lord, use even me, Just as Thou wilt, and when, and w...

Psalm 46 | PSALM of the week

Image
Photo by Jonathan Paulson Retrieved from jonathanphotos.com To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. A Song. God is our refuge and strength,      a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,      though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam,      though the mountains tremble at its swelling.           Selah There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,      the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;      God will help her when morning dawns. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter;      he utters his voice, the earth melts. The LORD of hosts is with us;      the God of Jacob is our fortress.           Selah Come, behold the works of the LORD, ...

“Bilbo's Song” | SONG of the week

Image
Text source: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Book II, Chapter 3 Song album: The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King - The Complete Recordings I sit beside the fire and think    of all that I have seen, of meadow-flowers and butterflies    in summers that have been; Of yellow leaves and gossamer    in autumns that there were, with morning mist and silver sun    and wind upon my hair. I sit beside the fire and think    of how the world will be when winter comes without a spring    that I shall never see. For still there are so many things    that I have never seen: in every wood in every spring    there is a different green. I sit beside the fire and think    of people long ago, and people who will see a world    that I shall never know. But all the while I sit and think    of times there were...

Isaiah 6 | BIBLE PASSAGE of the week

"In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.  Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall ...

Book: A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life Author: William Law (1686-1761) Year published: 1728 People influenced by the book: John Wesley, Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, Samuel Johnson, William Wilberforce, C.S. Lewis, John Piper "He . . . is the devout man, who lives no longer to his own will, or the way and spirit of the world, but to the sole will of God, who considers God in everything, who serves God in everything, who makes all the parts of the common life parts of piety, by doing everything in the Name of God, and under such rules as are conformable to His glory." "if you will here stop, and ask yourselves, why you are not as pious as the primitive Christians were, your own heart will tell you, that it is neither through ignorance nor inability, but purely because you never thoroughly intended it." "As there is but one God and Father of us all, whose glory gives light and life to everything that lives, whose presence fi...

Gospel passages about laborers in the harvest | BIBLE PASSAGES of the week

Image
Matthew 9:35-38 "And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." Luke 10:1-2 "After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest." John 4:30-42 "Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. In the me...

In celebration of this, I am posting another "theme verse" for the blog: Philippians 4:8. Of the Week's  first two theme verses are  1 Corinthians 10:31  and  Psalm 145:4.   This blog is meant to be a safe haven on the Web, where content that is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, commendable, virtuous, and praiseworthy can be enjoyed and shared. After more than 100 posts, the journey continues. Thank you for being a part of it!

“Take This Slowly” | SONG of the week

Image
Artist: The Gray Havens Album: Ghost of a King Year: 2016 If I took all that I got and spread it out on this table, it might not seem like a lot— a once glimmering joy slowly fadin' from view, all the change in my pockets (not enough), and this picture of you. Still I've heard all that I have in  a moment  is hardly a sign of everything comin' my way. I believe when I need it,  it will be mine. So let's take this slowly. All I need is comin', but  it's just beyond what I can see. So if my eyes press forward in fierce alarm, just turn my head back to see how we got this far, and I'll be alright. I'm not askin' for mountains of riches, no silver or gold. Don't need fame or fancier things I can't take when I go. I'm just asking for grace, grace to carry on, grace to take joy at my place at the table and the Rock that it's standin' on. Still I've heard all that I have in a moment  is hardly a si...
