“The Barefoot Boy” | POEM of the week

Image
by John Greenleaf Whittier Blessings on thee, little man, Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan! With thy turned-up pantaloons, And thy merry whistled tunes; With thy red lip, redder still Kissed by strawberries on the hill; With the sunshine on thy face, Through thy torn brim’s jaunty grace; From my heart I give thee joy,— I was once a barefoot boy! Prince thou art,—the grown-up man Only is republican. Let the million-dollared ride! Barefoot, trudging at his side, Thou hast more than he can buy In the reach of ear and eye,— Outward sunshine, inward joy: Blessings on thee, barefoot boy! Oh for boyhood’s painless play, Sleep that wakes in laughing day, Health that mocks the doctor’s rules, Knowledge never learned of schools, Of the wild bee’s morning chase, Of the wild-flower’s time and place, Flight of fowl and habitude Of the tenants of the wood; How the tortoise bears his shell, How the woodchuck digs his cell, And the ground...

Of the Week | BLOG of the week

Image
a collage of the first 100 "of the weeks" This is the 100th "of the week." Because of that, today's "of the week" is Of the Week itself. This blog exists to highlight on a weekly basis quality content that is entertaining, enlightening, or encouraging. When browsing the Web, you might occasionally see an "of the week" or "of the day." Some might feature music, some people, others Bible verses, and still others inspirational thoughts or quotes. Of the Week was specifically designed to not limit itself to any one category; and so far, 34 different categories have been used. The content should be limited in one way however: to "whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable" ( Philippians 4:8 ESV). It's been a fun journey so far, and I'm looking forward to the next 100 weeks. So have fun exploring  Of the Week's   first 100 post...

Google Chrome ad by Motion Theory | AD of the week

Image
Advertised product: Google Chrome Art directors: Mark Kudsi, John Fan Designers & animators: Joseph Chan, Motion Theory Year: 2009 Even though this 2009 Google Chrome ad is outdated in certain ways, it is still one of my favorite Google commercials. It's also nostalgic for me, reminding me of those days when the discovery of this new browser was a refreshing change. Eight years, fifty-two versions, and three logo styles later, Google Chrome is still going strong! "the height of sophistication is simplicity." Clare Boothe Luce

parable of the unforgiving servant | PARABLE of the week

Image
Matthew 18:21-35 "Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fel...

“Far Kingdom” | SONG of the week

Image
Artist: The Gray Havens Album: Fire and Stone Year: 2015 There is a far kingdom A ways from here, Beyond the storm and the sea. There will be no need of darkness And none for tears When that far kingdom I see. There’s a river we will know, Ever clear and ever full, From the fount that overflows In the light of the King. And when we drink it we will find That this joy, ever full, will ever rise. And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom, In the kingdom. There is a far kingdom On the other side of the glass, And by a faint light we see. Still there is more gladness Longing for the sight Than to behold or be filled, by anything. There’s a river we will know, Ever clear and ever full, From the fount that overflows In the light of the King. And when we drink it we will find That this joy, ever full, will ever rise. And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom, In the kingdom. There is a far, far kingdom, There at the end of the sea, Where they know my name. And until ...
