ending of Israel in Egypt | CHORUSES & RECITATIVES of the week
Oratorio: Israel in Egypt
Composer: George Frideric Handel (Februaury 23, 1685-April 14, 1759)
Words (based on Exodus 15:18-21, 15:1):
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them:
Sing ye to the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously!
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.
The horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
The Lord shall reign for ever and ever. For hath triumphed gloriously. I will sing unto the Lord. The horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.
I will sing unto the Lord, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

So Handel died 254 years ago this month. I wonder if any modern music will still be known two centuries from today...
